Roger Federer [2] def. Stefanos Tsitsipas [5] 6-4 6-4
It had been a slow start at the tournament for the No. 2 seed Roger Federer, taken to three sets in his first two matches before stamping on the throttle, especially in his semi-final against a weary Borna Coric.
But he saved the best until last as he took on Stefanos Tsitsipas. The last time Federer was on a court, the young Greek stunned him in the fourth round of the Australian Open. Federer meant business from the off, breaking Tsitsipas in the first game.
Tsitsipas, who had thrown himself around the court, perhaps to his detriment in the semi-final with Gael Monfils stayed competitive throughout and made Federer work for the first set, saving three set points and bringing up two break points of his own before Federer wrapped up a one-set lead.
Tsitsipas showed exactly why he is one to watch for the future, and the only break of the match came on the only break point of the second set, and as befits reaching a century of titles, served out the set to love.
Federer quipped: “It’s great to win my eighth title here and my 100th overall. It’s been a wonderful couple of weeks for me.
“I don’t know if he was even born when I won my first title! But it’s a privilege because one day I’ll be watching these guys on TV.
“I’m sure Stefanos will have a wonderful year. Tennis is in good hands, whether I’m here or not.”
Federer will next play at Indian Wells which takes place between 7-17 March.
