Preview: Dan Evans v Aslan Karatsev | H2H: First Meeting
The British No. 1 Dan Evans is back in action after his extremely tight and riveting battle with Roger Federer last week. The 30-year-old came so close to what would arguably be the biggest win of his career.
As he is seeded in Dubai, the Brit gets a bye into round two – and Aslan Karatsev stands between him and a place in round three. The Russian has already had the most successful season of his career so far, making a maiden Grand Slam semi-final on his main draw debut.
Karatsev’s only losses this season have come to the reigning hard court Grand Slam champions: Novak Djokovic and Dominic Thiem.

Playing Styles
Karatsev plays an aggressive brand on tennis which will be amplified due to the level of confidence he must be feeling. The World no. 45 started the match on an eight match winning streak, helping him accumulate a 10-2 record on the season.
Blessed with clean groundstrokes, the Russian hits an extremely heavy, yet flat ball on both wings – although his forehand is the more superior. Karatsev looks to bully his opponents from the back of the court and can easily finish off points with a winner. He is also capable of gaining cheap points off of his serve, making him a tough player to defeat on his day.
Evans has also had a great season, claiming his maiden tour title early in the year. The Brit surprised many in his last contest when he pushed Federer to the limit, so there is no doubting he could go deep in Dubai. Evans will need to stay patient and consistent, something he has done all year, if he wants to get through this one.
Prediction
Karatsev may be the most difficult unseeded floater in the 46-man draw. The Russian has already played a match at this year’s event – a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Egor Gerasimov. The World No. 45 also has impressive wins over the likes of Diego Schwartzman and Felix Auger Aliassime this season, proving he can mix with the best if needs be. Evans has taken his game to the next level in recent times and he should slice and dice his way into the third round.
Prediction: Evans in three sets.
