DOHA, QATAR – Jack Draper cruised past Christopher O’Connell to reach the quarter-finals in Doha where he will face a resurgent Matteo Berrettini.

Jack Draper is into the quarter-finals in Doha after a sizzling straight sets win over qualifier Christopher O’Connell. It was a dominant display from the first ball as Draper sent an early message with an incredible stretched forehand winner. That shot took the headlines in a sensational opening game that saw Draper break.
There was very little for O’Connell to celebrate but the Australian did grind out a hold of serve as he slowly found his confidence on the forehand side. There wasn’t much joy for O’Connell on return though as Draper continued to hold to love, applying pressure on O’Connell’s service games. The Australian couldn’t handle the pressure for long with Draper securing another break for a 5-2 lead before wrapping up the opening set in 29 minutes.
At the start of the second set, Draper continued to work the angles and exploit O’Connell’s weaknesses. Although the qualifier continued to be resilient as he saved three break points, O’Connell couldn’t quite get over the line. This would cost him with Draper converting his fourth match point to break in the opening game.
A disheartening moment in the match for O’Connell and one that would affect him for the rest of the set as Draper continued to hit winners. There was no let up from Draper as the British number one secured a further two breaks of serve to cruise into the quarter-finals in Qatar.

Draper will now face a resurgent Matteo Berrettini for a place in the semi-finals with Draper winning their only previous meeting.

Playing Styles and Prediction
Berrettini is enjoying a resurgent start to the season and that was only solidified when he defeated Novak Djokovic for the first time in five meetings in the opening round. The Italian is aiming for a deep run in Qatar to improve his ranking as he has his sights set on a Grand Slam seeding in the coming months.
Draper looks to be aggressive on the backhand as he will use angles and depth to force errors from Berrettini. Meanwhile Berrettini will look to serve accurately and use the forehand to neutralise Draper’s attacking play. This will be a contest decided by small margins as this match could go anyway although Draper has the right to start this match as slight favourite given his more consistent form.
Prediction: Draper in three sets.
