Dan Evans eased into the second round in Doha with a comfortable straight sets victory over Egor Gerasimov. The Belarusian used his powerful baseline shots mixed with crafty net play to establish early dominance on serve. However Evans seized control of the match in the fifth game with the Brit breaking to love for a 3-2 lead.

Evans’ backhand winners mixed with variety were enough to cause Gerasimov problems as the Belarusian continued to rack up the unforced errors. Evans closed out the opening set in 41 minutes to take a one set lead. The Brit continued the momentum into the second set as some smart returning saw Evans break in the opening game.

Despite Evans having two match points in the ninth game and not being able to break, the fifth seed closed out the match with some nice touch at the net as he moved into the second round in Doha for the second year in a row.

Evans has the advantage when it comes to converting break point opportunities but will need to improve under pressure on serve if he wants to reach the last eight.

Playing Styles and Prediction

Davidovich Fokina is a player who is eccentric and not even he knows what he will do next on a tennis court. The Spaniard has recorded some good results last season especially on clay and is a very powerful and athletic player from the baseline and also at the net.

Evans will need to have an accurate combination of power and slice as well as timing his aggression right. The Brit will need to be observational in how he attacks the Spaniard’s game and this should be a good test for Evans in terms of being aggressive and resilient on a consistent basis. This should be an entertaining contest but one an in-form Evans should get through.

Prediction: Evans in three sets.
