Cameron Norrie defeated the No.3 seed Taylor Fritz 6-4 6-7(4) 6-4. The World No.36 is the highest-ranked opponent the Brit had beaten so far in 2020. Norrie, making his second appearance in Delray Beach, withstood 13 aces to move to the second round.

He claimed three breaks, winning 63% of second-serve return points against the American, who clinched 84% of his first-serve points. Norrie, who suffered a first-round loss in 2018 here, levelled at 2-2 his head to head series against the 2019 Eastbourne champion.

The Brit will meet American wildcard Brandon Nakashima for the first time, for a quarter-final spot. The teenager contested his first-ever Tour-level match in the first round on Monday, where he defeated World No. 74 Jiri Vesely, who recently won the title in Pune.

Earlier this month, he defeated Frances Tiafoe in a Challenger event in Dallas. His opponent appreciated his great backhand and his good serve. A former World No.4 in the junior rankings, the San Diego native now sits at a career-high of No. 290 after reaching a couple of Challenger semifinals last year and an ITF Futures title won last month. Nakashima has no points to defend for the next seven months.

Nakashima, who reached the semifinals at the junior US Open last year, could cause some trouble to the British left-hander. His impressive performance against Fritz, however, should give him enough confidence to overcome the challenge and move to the quarter-finals.

The match is scheduled third on Stadium Court, not before 2:30pm (7.30 GMT)

Prediction: Norrie wins in straight sets
