Brit of the Week

Katy Dunne entered the ITF event in Les Franqueses del Vallès and was unseeded. In the first round Dunne drew Eden Silva who had come through qualifying. The first set saw Dunne and Silva staying toe to toe. Dunne managed to get the breakthrough and took the set. In the second set Dunne overcame the fellow Brit breaking early. Dunne eased into the second round in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.

The second round saw Dunne against Maria Gutierrez Carrasco. The Spaniard was no match for the Brit who broke easily in both sets. Despite the best efforts of Gutierrez Carrasco the Brit took no time at all in defeating the Spaniard to move into quarter-final 6-3,6-2.

In the quarter-final the Brit was against the fourth seed Nina Stojanović. The Serbian managed to break Dunne and take the first set. Dunne re-grouped in the second set, breaking Stojanović and dominating the set to level up. The final set was very close, with neither player giving an inch. Eventually the Brit secured the break of serve towards the end of the set. Dunne held on to take the win 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.

The semi-final was another battle of the Brits. Dunne was against Jodie Burrage and didn’t get off to the best of starts. Burrage broke serve of Dunne and took the first set. However, Dunne fought back in the second set. Although close, it was Dunne that broke right towards the end of the set and levelled the match up. In the final set Dunne had worked out her fellow Brit and dominated the set to move into the final 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.

In the final the Brit was against the top seed Paula Badosa Gibert. On paper, this should have been an easy victory for the Spaniard. Dunne had not read the script however. The first set was tight, with both players staying toe to toe. The Brit managed to break through right towards the end of the set and took the lead. In the second set Badosa Gilbert was unable to come back and Dunne took the victory to claim her first 60k title 7-5, 6-3.
