Brit of the Week

Anton Matusevich entered the ITF event in Madrid and was unseeded. In the first round the Brit was against Alvaro Blanco Damea. Matusevich was able to obtain the break of serve in both sets, whilst the Spaniard was unable to break back. The Brit moved into the second round in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.

The second round saw Matusevich against American Nicolas Moreno De Alboran. The Brit continued in the form from the first round. Moreno De Alboran had nothing to bother the Brit with. Matusevich was soon ahead in both sets, and moved into the quarter-final in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.

In the quarter-final the Brit was against the second seed Carlos Boluda-Purkiss. The Spaniard tried hard to stay with Matusevich, but could not stop the break of serve in both sets. The Brit moved on to the semi-final and had yet to drop a set, the score 6-3, 6-4.

The semi-final saw the Brit against Alejandro Garcia. The Spaniard got off to the better start and surprised Matusevich, breaking serve. Garcia took the first set and the lead. The Brit fought back hard in the second set and broke in the second set to force a decider. In the final set both players went toe to toe until the very end, when the Brit secured the necessary break to move into the final 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.

In the final the Brit was against Nicolás Álvarez Varona. The Spaniard forced Matusevich to play his best tennis, before finally securing the break required.  Álvarez Varona was unable to break back and the Brit was in the lead. The second set saw the Brit break again and lift the title as the Spaniard could not get back in the game. Matusevich took the title 7-5, 6-4.
