BASEL, SWITZERLAND – Andy Murray searches for an end of season confidence boost when he takes on Yannick Hanfmann in his opening round match in Basel.

Murray will looking for a rapid improvement on return as he takes on the consistent serving of Hanfmann.

 

 

Playing styles and prediction

Hanfmann has earned wins over Stefanos Tsitsipas and Dominic Thiem this season as the German looks to break into the world’s top 50. The 31 year-old has a big serve which is backed up by consistent and powerful hitting especially on the forehand side as Hanfmann looks for another big result in 2023.

Murray will look to improve on return as he looks for depth and pace to set up short balls from Hanfmann in order for the Brit to be aggressive. Meanwhile Hanfmann will look to be dominant on serve as he aims to use the forehand to create space on the court and break down Murray’s defensive game. The Brit may be overpowered in the early stages of the match but Murray’s defensive resilience and craft should be enough to see him into the second round.

Prediction: Murray in three sets.
