Norrie will need to be aware of Mayot’s return efficiency as the Brit searches for some confidence on big points after a good start to the season.

Playing styles and prediction

After narrowly missing out on the Australian Open main draw, Mayot has recovered well and produced a consistent last few weeks which includes a Challenger final in Barletta. Now the qualifier will aim to break into the world’s top 100 as he looks to show why he deserves a main draw wildcard at Roland Garros.

Norrie needs to be aggressive on serve as he looks to be clear with his tactics in his search for confidence from the baseline. Meanwhile Mayot will aim to continue his good from by continuing to produce power on return while being calm on serve. This will be a difficult opening round for Norrie against an in-form opponent but the Brit is expected to raise his level to ensure a much-needed win on clay.

Prediction: Norrie in three sets.

Brandon Nakashima def Dan Evans 7-6(5) 6-2

There will be no second round for Dan Evans as he lost in straight sets to Brandon Nakashima. The Brit broke in the opening game but lost confidence easily against an aggressive Nakashima as Evans lost four games in a row. However Evans would respond well by breaking back to love in the ninth game as the opening set went to a tiebreak. The Brit went up a mini-break on two separate occasions but Evans lost his composure in big moments to lose the set and eventually the match. Now Evans will now focus on the fourth Masters 1000 event of the season which takes place in Madrid on the 25th of April.
