H2H: Dan Evans (WR 38) Rinky Hijikata (WR 71)
Tournament Previous Best Quarter-Final (2020) R1 (2023)
1st Serve % 59 58.5
Service Games Won % 78.2 76.2
Break Points Saved % 62.2 60
2nd Serve Return Points Won % 48.7 49.6
Break Points Converted % 37.3 35.2

Evans improved his efficiency towards the end of last season on both serve and return with the British number two looking to continue that form in 2024.

Playing styles and prediction

Hijikata has achieved consistent results on the Challenger circuit as well as being able to raise his game at the Grand Slam events. The Australian has benefited from his Australian Open doubles title last year alongside Jason Kubler and now Hijikata is looking to continue his upwards trajectory as he aims for a place in the world’s top 50.

Evans will look to remain efficient on both serve and return as he looks to take the ball early on return in order to force errors from Hijikata from the baseline. Meanwhile the Australian will look to make charges to the net as he looks to remain consistent on serve while remaining patient and wait for the opportunities on return. This should be a testing opening match of the season for Evans but one that he should win given his quality.

Prediction: Evans in three sets.
