Although a spot in the quarter-finals will mean a first win over Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman, he already has form in that regard snapping a two-match losing streak against Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka in three sets.

Despite going down a break before the first sit-down, Norrie was tenacious when they got back up, breaking Nishioka three times in a row to grab the first set. However, in almost a reverse image of the first set, the Japanese player started the second set with three straight breaks before Norrie claimed one of the breaks back, making him work for the set, saving five set points in total before succumbing on the sixth.

A flurry of breaks in the middle of the decider saw Norrie just edge ahead, finishing with a flourish as he broke once more to get his first win over Nishioka.

He will need to dig deep for another first time win as he takes on the No. 4 seed Schwartzman, who is looking to advance past the round of 16 for the first time. Schwartzman’s best performance this year was to make the Buenos Aires final, but came down to earth with a bump, getting dumped out of Rio in his opening round. He has had a couple of back to back wins on hard courts, but this season has started rather tamely for the diminutive Argentinian.

Schwartzman might not have the most powerful serve, but his return is solid, and makes things harder for taller players with his ability to batter the ball back while it is on the rise, and he will run a lot and will try and run everything down.

While Norrie does a lot of things pretty well, he will find himself tested in terms of court coverage, and will look to make use of a capable serve and an improved flatter forehand to try and keep Schwartzman where he wants him, stopping him from controlling the court.

Experience though is on the side of the No. 4 seed, although their last encounter was a tight three setter, and Norrie would be doing very well to take Schwartzman to three again.

Prediction: Schwartzman in three sets.
