Preview: Cameron Norrie v Stefan Kozlov [Q] | H2H: Norrie leads 2-0 (Futures/Qualies)

Once a junior hitting partner of the Davis Cup team that faced Great Britain in 2015, Stefan Kozlov has seemed a little lost in the wilderness, playing out most of his time on Futures and Challengers, while Cameron Norrie has worked his way steadily up the rankings. Kozlov made it as high as World No. 115 but has slipped far back down the list.

Tale of the Tape – Key Stats (2021)

H2H: Cameron Norrie (WR 61) Stafen Kozlov (WR 389)
Tournament Previous Best Semi-final (2019) R1 (2017)
1st Serve % 65.4 69.3
Service Pts Won % 61.4 62.4
Break Points Saved % 62.5 55.6
2nd Serve Return Points Won % 51 57.9
Break Points Converted % 39.2 52.8

Taking into account the lower tier matches that Kozlov has fitted in to the year so far, the stats seem to favour the American over the far more experienced Norrie. The Brit’s saving grace here is that he has experience of having faced Kozlov in the past.

Playing Styles

Once upon a time a young Kozlov and a chap by the name of Frances Tiafoe were with the USA Davis Cup team as rookie hitting partners, and great things were expected of both of them. You may remember one of those names… but Kozlov’s career turned south after reaching a career high and he is now languishing well outside the top 300.

He was formidable on grass, but he seemed, at the time, to lack the same kind of easy power a lot of his young American compatriots have on the tour right now.

Interestingly, Norrie is not the most powerful player out there either but he can do a little bit of everything, and he does that well enough on all surfaces to have maintained a steady rise up the rankings, and a presence on the tour. He has precision with a capable serve, and moves very well and has a solid eye for the bigger picture in a match.

Prediction

Of course, Norrie will come into the match with just practice behind him after the indoor hard courts of Marseille, and Kozlov  has worked his way through three qualifying rounds and will feel match tight. But given his stats also take into account matches he has played on the much lower tour, those numbers perhaps flatter to deceive.

Norrie has the experience to walk this, and rightly should.

Prediction: Norrie in straight sets.
