Cameron Norrie is into the quarter-finals at an ATP event for a third consecutive week after the Brit edged out John Isner in three sets. As predicted the serve was the crucial factor in this match and Norrie served strongly in the opening set, opening up the court to earn winners past the tall American.

Six of the first ten service games were held to love as Norrie couldn’t play his way into Isner’s service games with most of the points becoming a lottery. The tightest service game came in the eleventh game when Isner was forced to save three break points in a long game to hold for 6-5. Nothing separated the pair as the opening set went to a tiebreak and it was the American who dominated proceedings as Norrie produced too many unforced errors. Isner made no mistake on serve as he took the tiebreak 7-2 and gained a one set advantage.

The second set saw Norrie act positively on return ensuring he was proactive at every possible opportunity. Despite missing out on the break in the second game, Norrie’s persistently aggressive tennis paid off and the Brit converted his first break point opportunity of the set to take a 3-1 lead. Norrie had to survive some aggressive tennis from Isner in the seventh game but otherwise produced a clean set of tennis to take the second set 6-3 in 33 minutes.

In the third set both players continued to produce smart and aggressive serving as they neutralised their opponents’ returns. After holding his opening two service games to love, Norrie faced a sterner test in the third service game but just about edged to a hold which allowed him to grow into the match on return. That showed in the very next game as he broke Isner’s serve and he would close out the match to reach the last eight in Acapulco.

Norrie will now play German lucky loser Peter Gojowczyk next after Gojowczyk benefited from Alexander Zverev’s unsportsmanlike conduct in doubles action earlier in the week.

Playing Styles and Prediction

Gojowczyk had struggled for form and confidence heading into this tournament having failed to win a match from five tournaments this season. However luck and persistence now sees the German into an ATP quarter-final with the 32 year-old possessing good returning and groundstroke qualities to hurt any player.

Norrie’s consistency will be the key to victory here with Gojowczyk likely to overcommit to groundstrokes as he tends to be over-aggressive. The German will likely produce great power in moments but nothing consistent that Norrie should be worried about. Another great performance here will set him nicely for tougher matches to come in the next two rounds.

Prediction: Norrie in straight sets.
