While Garbiñe Muguruza has the lead, it has been a couple of years since they played each other. Since then Muguruza has won two Grand Slam titles, while Simona Halep still has ‘thoughts’ about her missed opportunity in this year’s Roland Garros final.

Advantage: Muguruza

Titles History

Simona Halep Garbiñe Muguruza
Titles (2017) 15 (1) 4 (1)
Slams (2017) 0 (0) 2 (1)

It seems crazy that half of Muguruza’s total titles are Slams but the numbers don’t lie. But Halep has been a lot more consistent at a tour level over her career, and it feels like it is only recent;y that Muguruza has appreciated that this consistency has to be across the tour, and not just for the big events.

That being said she has been in supreme form this US hard court swing, but in the last two matches, Halep’s determination has really shone through.

Advantage: Halep

Year to Date W/L Record

Simona Halep Garbiñe Muguruza
All surfaces W/L 39-11 38-15
Hard Court 15-6 22-9

Halep’s early woes with injury at the start of the year have put a dent in her year-to-date stats on the hard courts, but they are pretty consistent over the year, evening out across all the surfaces.

Match Stats 2017

Simona Halep Garbiñe Muguruza
Tie-Breaks 9-4 4-7
Deciding sets 12-7 15-5

Halep’s gritty determination has seen her take control in tie-breaks, but Muguruza’s record has looked a little shaky this year.

Deciding Sets

It has been easier for payers to come back at Muguruza, while Halep has been aybe a little more efficient in that regard.

Advantage: Halep

Muguruza has a narrow lead in being far more effective on her first serves, but Halep’s return game has proved to be to her aggressive advantage – especially in her last two matches where she was bossing the points from the get-go.

Moreover, she just edges Muguruza in terms of her total points won and has yet to drop a set, whereas Muguruza has had to fight her way through. It is great that she has demonstrated that fight whereas at tomes in the past she has looked quick to capitulate, but the edge here has to go to Halep.

Advantage: Halep

Halep and Muguruza will play for the WTA Cincinnati title at 2pm (7pm BST).
