Quebec City, Canada – Naomi Broady had an amazing week to book a spot in her first ever WTA semi final. After earning the main draw spot as a lucky loser progress was swift through the rounds.
Broady had lost in the final qualifying round. The top seed could have been on the next plane out, however Broady landed a lucky loser spot in the main draw thanks to withdrawals. The Brit took full advantage of the opportunity winning the first two round matches in straight sets.
In the quarter final Broady was up against Anna Tatishvili (USA). The Brit and the American exchanged service breaks in the first set, before Tatishvili managed to break again taking the set 6-3. Broady would have to win this the hard way. In the second set the Brit stood firm as the American tried to break serve again. Broady saved both of the opportunities the American created, whilst creating six of her own on Tatishvili game. Just as the set appeared to be heading to a tiebreak Broady secured the break to level the match.
The final set saw both players making in roads on the other serve, the difference was that the Brit again stood firm and refused to allow the break. The American tried to stop the break coming from Broady but it came at the right time. Broady would serve out for a place in her first ever WTA semi final.
In the semi final Broady will play Jelena Ostapenko from Latvia. With the run so far here Broady will rise provisionally to 125, up 32 places, and is the British number three. Broady will have to play two semi finals today as she also made the doubles semi final.
Over on the ATP side, Brydan Klein has been playing the Cary Tennis Championship. Making progress through the earlier rounds without much trouble, the sixth seed faced the top seed Bjorn Fratangelo (USA). Klein came out on a mission not letting the top seed get any momentum, took the first set with ease as the Brit served up a breadstick set. The second set saw the top seed trying to stage a comeback. Breaking the sixth seed twice, the top seed levelled the match setting up a thrilling final set showdown. The final set saw the Brit taking the match to the American, the momentum had changed again. The sixth seed did not give anything away as the top seed was unable to get close to the break. Klein held on to every service game and secured the vital break to take the match and book a place in the semi final. Klein will face Dennis Novikov another American in the semi final later today.
Play continues in Quebec City 18:00 BST & Cary from 19:00 BST
