Brit of the Week

Mark Whitehouse was seeded seventh at the ITF Futures event in Barnstaple. In the first round Whitehouse was drawn against James Story. The non seeded Brit got off to the better start and managed to break serve and took the first set.

Whitehouse fought back in the second set securing the break of serve on Story right at the end of the set to level up the match. The final set was very close with neither player wanting to give an inch. Ultimately it was the seed who showed the better experience and broke serve to take the match 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.

The second round saw the seventh seed against Robert Carter. Whitehouse went toe to toe with Carter and the set went to a tiebreak as neither could break the deadlock. It was the non seed that edged the tiebreak to take the lead. Whitehouse re-grouped in the second set securing the break of serve to level up the match. In the final set, once again both went toe to toe and another tiebreak followed. This time it was the seed who prevailed and moved into the quarter-final 6-7(9), 6-2, 7-6(7).

In the quarter-final the Brit was up against the second seed Francesco Vilardo. The Italian fought hard to stay with Whitehouse, however the seventh seed managed to break serve in each set. Vilardo was unable to break back and it was the Brit that moved on to the semi-final in straight sets 6-4, 7-5.

The semi-final saw Whitehouse against another Brit George Houghton. After a tough battle in the first set, where the seed finally managed to break serve to take the lead, Houghton was unable to keep up. The seventh seed progressed into the final in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.

In the final the seventh seed was up against youngster Aidan McHugh. The 18 year old had defeated the second seed in the previous round, and continued that form in the first set. Although broken by Whitehouse who took the set, McHugh fought back well in the second and levelled the match. The final set went the distance and a tiebreak followed, which Whitehouse dominated to take the title 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(2).
