APTOS, CALIFORNIA, USA – Liam Broady comes through qualifying to make the final of the Challenger event.

Brit of the Week

Liam Broady came through qualifying at the ATP Challenger event to make the main draw. In the first round the Brit drew Ruben Bemelmans the fourth seed. The Belgian claimed the first set with just the one break of serve meaning that Broady would have to win the hard way. The second set went the way of the Brit as he broke the Belgian to level up the match, in the final set Broady dominated the set as the Belgian could do very little against the Brit 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

The second round saw the Brit against another Belgian, this time it was Joris De Loore who had come into the main draw as an alternate. Broady continued from where he had left off in the first round, as the Belgian had no answer to anything the Brit threw at him. Broady dominated the whole match and lost only four games as he progressed 6-2, 6-2.

In the quarter final Broady was up against Raymond Sarmiento, the Brit had a little bit of a harder time than the previous round but Broady secured the break in the first set to move ahead. The second set was much like the first and no matter what the American tried he could not break the Brit who moved into the semi final 6-4, 6-4.

The Semi final had the Brit up against Taylor Fritz, who had entered as a wildcard. The American pushed Broady hard in the first set and forced a tiebreak. The Brit had little trouble in the tiebreak and ran out to a lead that Fritz could not claim back and took the first set. The second set and Broady was by now in control, Fritz could literally do nothing against the Brit who took the match and a place in the final 7-6(3), 6-3.

In the final Broady was playing Alexander Bublik, the Kazakh was too strong for the Brit in the first set and lost only two games. The second set started badly for Broady as he was broken early, however he held on the best he could but it was not to be as Bublik held serve for the rest of the match, Broady lost 2-6, 3-6 but it was a very good run.
