WTA Lexington
- Shelby Rogers came out on top of an all-American quarter-final as she stunned Serena Williams to make the semi-finals
- Coco Gauff also came through a tough match against Ons Jabeur
- Highlights via WTA YouTube
Rogers’ self-belief was key in the match, and as her confidence grew, her serve was not broken once in the second and third sets, compared to Williams’ confident start.
Rogers said, after the match: “It was important for me going onto the court thinking I could win that match, and knowing I could take care of my service games.
“I just tried to control what I could control, and that’s mostly my service games, and then if I had an opportunity, I tried to capitalise. I think the few that I did have today, I was able to do that.”
Williams had tough battles the entire week, with three-setters every step of the way, and felt there was a lot to improve.
“I had an opportunity to possibly win in straight sets so i kind of made it difficult for myself by making a plethora of unforced errors.
“It’s good to know I can play a lot better.”
Gauff has also come through some tight matches, having to come back from a set and a break down to take out the talented and tricky Jabeur.
The 16-year-old is still limited in terms of how many tournaments she can enter, as she made her return to the tour for the first time since losing to the eventual Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin earlier this year.
She said, after her match: “The biggest thing was mentality. Even though I wasn’t playing the way I would’ve liked, I think staying strong and positive definitely kept me in the match today.
“The more matches I have, the more experience I get. The more different types of playing styles that I get to play against, the more I’ll get used to that kind of style and how to approach the match.”

Halep is another player who makes a full return to the tour since last being action in Dubai. The rust was there as she toiled through three-setters in her opening two rounds, but breezed into the semi-finals on another rain-disrupted day in Prague.
After the match Halep said: “The whole game… was better today. I’m happy that I can play better and better day by day. It was a good one and I’ll take it.”
