WTA Yarra Valley Classic & Quick Hits
- Venus Williams rolled back the years with an impressively speedy win over Arantxa Rus. She was 5-0 up before the Dutchwoman could even react, before closing out a very comfortable straight sets win. The 40-year-old will face Petra Kvitova in the second round.
- It was a bad day to be a French seed as both Fiona Ferro and Kristina Mladenovic both fell in the first round.

WTA Gippsland Trophy & Quick Hits
- One of the more entertaining encounters was the comeback of Jelena Ostapenko against Sara Errani. After dropping the first set, the 2017 Roland Garros champion finally got the better of the 2012 Roland Garros finalist.
- It looked like a welcome return to form for France’s Caroline Garcia – who fared better than her compatriots in the Yarra Valley Classic
- Another welcome winner was Andrea Petkovic, who came through a tough encounter against Martina Trevisan, earning a match-up against the No. 3 seed Elina Svitolina.
