  • Top seed Andy Murray won the Battle of the Brits when he beat the British No. 2 Kyle Edmund despite being tested by the younger Brit, who looks sure to crack the Top 50 when the new rankings are released on Monday.
  • Murray will face seasoned campaigner David Ferrer. The fifth seed beat ATP Next Gen Alexander Zverev, coming from a set down and encounters between two of the best counterpunchers on the tour is likely to be gruelling.
  • It was a busy day for Milos Raonic – the third seed had to play twice as the weather had caused havoc with the schedule.

  • Madison Keys not only ended Petra Kvitova’s charmed run in Asia, she effectively ended her hopes of returning to Singapore with her win, solidifying her position as eighth on the Road to Singapore.
  • Along with Johanna Konta, Keys is secured for the Zhuhai tournament that followed the WTA Finals, but both are now in with a shout to make the Singapore line-up.
  • Also on the cards for Konta would be her Top 10 debut off the back of another win on her Beijing debut.
  • Meanwhile – only China Open champion left in the draw Agnieszka Radwanska made short work of Yaroslava Shvedova in a late finish after rain meant matches were shifted to the roofed court.

ATP Tokyo Results & Quick Hits

  • Marin Cilic & David Goffin helped boost their late bids to join the line-up for the ATP World Tour Finals with their quarter-final wins. Both are outside the cut right now but with No. 8 Dominic Thiem out of Shanghai now, and with No. 9 Tomas Berdych out in the first round of Tokyo, Cilic can pass Berdych and catch up on Thiem with the title. Goffin would be within 540 of Thiem if he goes on to lift the title
  • 2 seed Gael Monfils seemed untroubled by the ankle injury from his previous match with Gilles Simon as he went toe-to-toe with seventh seed Ivo Karlovic who played his eighth straight tie-break set with his loss to the Frenchman
