WTA Indian Wells Results & Quick Hits

  • She might be the World No. 1 again at the end of the tournament, but thanks to Angelique Kerber we learned a new German word – umweg (detour). When it comes to making life hard for herself, we can count on Kerber who looked in danger of heading to Miami early, before two breaks that helped her finally get over the line.
  • However there was no such fight-back for Simona Halep. Her season just refuses to get started as she was ousted in straight sets by Kristina Mladenovic. The Romanian has just two wins to her name this year so far.
  • Serena Williams might be out of the picture for the spring US Hard Court swing but Venus Williams is doing just fine. After coming through an epic match with Jelena Jankovic, it was a far easier affair for Williams the elder as she advanced in straight sets over Lucie Safarova.
  • Another top seed bit the dust as Peng Shuai eased past Agnieszka Radwanska as the sixth seed exited early.
  • Madison Keys emphatically announced her intentions with a clobbering win over Naomi Osaka. In what had been a highly anticipated encounter, Keys was dominant completely in the first set, with Osaka making it a little more competitive in the second set – but not by much. Keys will be in action again tonight in another potential corker.

ATP Indian Wells Results and Quick Hits

  • It was more a case of unlucky 13 for Tomas Berdych. On his 13th straight appearance at Indian Wells, Berdych was shocked by Lucky Loser Yoshihito Nishioka. He put No. 19 seed Ivo Karlovic in the previous round and backed it up with a great comeback from a set down to beat the 2-13 semi-finalist.
  • Also in the unlucky stakes was Vasek Pospisil. The qualifier had put out World No. 1 Andy Murray in the second round, but was edged in a tight three-setter by Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic.
  • Tuesday of course sees the stacked quarter back in action with the blockbuster of the night surely the clash between Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin Del Potro. The last time they met Djokovic prevailed, but at what cost as he exited in the next round. Djokovic handled Britain’s Kyle Edmund handily enough, but will we see an epic against the Tower of Tandil.
  • Elsewhere we are just two wins away from an Australian Open rematch, with Roger Federer facing home hope Steve Johnson, and Rafael Nadal in an all-Spanish clash with Fernando Verdasco.
