  • Continuing his comeback, World No. 1 Andy Murray ground to a halt, after relinquishing a 4-0 lead over Albert Ramos-Vinolas [15] to exit well before the semi-final stage he reached last year. Although disappointed to have lost from such a commanding position, Murray conceded if anyone had offered him a third round of an ATP Masters 1000 10 days ago, he would have taken it.
  • Who would be a seed? Following on from Murray’s departure, Stan Wawrinka exited stage right – the 2014 champion was edged out by Pablo Cuevas, who has regained some form in recent weeks.
  • Rafael Nadal is not anyone’s idea of a villain, but he popped Alexander Zverev’s birthday balloon. As the German left his teenage years behind, Nadal allowed him just two games on his 20th birthday as he is looking increasingly like a history maker, with Il Decimo beckoning.
  • Marin Cilic has been doing what he does best and slipping though the draw largely un-noticed but he was on fire, dispatching Tomas Berdych with ease.
