Kyle Edmund [3] vs Alex De Minaur [WC] H2H: First meeting
Kyle Edmund opens up his week in Portugal with a very interesting second round match-up against the rising star of Australia, Alex De Minaur. The young Australian has made huge strides in the last twelve months and has benefited fully from learning from multiple Grand Slam champion Lleyton Hewitt, who has been mentoring him for a while now.
De Minaur can do many things well. He has already shown that his game can work on nearly any surface. A junior grand slam final at Wimbledon, his first ATP progress on hard courts and his recent results on the clay all point in the direction of a player that can produce consistent results all year round.
Edmund will have to be wary of the Australian and he must be prepared to mentally prepare for the ball coming back into play more often than it usually would. De Minaur plays every ball with full commitment but also has the necessary weapons that he sometimes does not get the credit for.
The most interesting battle will be Edmund’s serve coming up against De Minaur’s return. The 19-year-old made a name for himself in Brisbane and Sydney because of how many meaningful returns he manages to get into play and how he can neutralise the bigger serves, quite like the way Hewitt used to. The battle of those two shots could settle the match in Portugal.
Prediction: Edmund in three sets
