Kyle Edmund starts against Daniil Medvedev in Madrid

MADRID, SPAIN – Kyle Edmund arrives in Madrid after his doubles triumph in Estoril but can he adapt to the conditions for a first round win at the Mutua Madrid Open.

Kyle Edmund v Daniil Medvedev | H2H: Edmund leads 1-0

It is a quick turnaround for the British No. 1 Kyle Edmund who hops across from Portugal to Madrid for his debut at the Madrid Masters.

He will face Daniil Medvedev, who finds himself in the same boat and they will both need to adapt to the altitude and quick flying balls in their first-round match. The Russian will look to get Edmund busy from the baseline, and while Edmund has his powerful forehand, Medvedev is not without tricks in this regard, with a bit of spin to fool his opponent and a solid backhand to back it up as probably his better shot.

However, his movement can be an issue, and if Edmund can resist the urge to always go for his serve and forehand one-two punch combo, and get him moving around the court, then he is in with a good chance of a win on his debut.

However, let’s not forget that Edmund is still making his own way back after an injury and then illness only saw him come back for Indian Wells and Miami. He is, however, on his favoured clay and although he tailed off pretty badly in his quarter-final in Estoril, he made up for it with his first tour doubles title, partnering Cameron Norrie.

Hopefully it will set him up to do battle against Medvedev who has probably stolen a march on Edmund by getting here a little earlier having lost in the first round of Estoril. But wins instil confidence, and some variation to Edmund’s play could be the key here.

Prediction: Edmund in three sets.

Edmund and Medvedev are scheduled on Pista 5. Not before 4:30pm (3:30pm BST).
