MADRID, SPAIN – British No. 1 Johanna Konta faces a real battle on her hands as she takes on Stuttgart’s champion Laura Siegemund in the first round of the WTA Mutua Madrid Open.

Johanna Konta [6] v Laura Siegemund – H2H: Siegemund leads 1-0

Despite a pretty thorough defeat at the hands of Madrid Open champion Simona Halep in the Tie Break Tens fast-format tournament earlier in the week, Johanna Konta is relishing the chance to improve especially if it means playing a player who is in some great form just now.

She told “It’s a very difficult match. I’m really looking forward to the challenge – I think it’s a great opportunity for me to play someone who’s playing well on the surface and to really improve my game as well.”

It is no secret that clay, especially at the tour level has hardly been her friend of late, but she ought to take comfort from her win over Naomi Osaka, who was match-tight in Stuttgart having come through the qualifying rounds.

The altitude will make the balls fly and that could be in Konta’s favour as she looks to maintain her aggressive game. Her movement will have been given a workout in the exhibition earlier in the week, but she faces a confident Laura Siegemund who went one better than her run through qualifying to the Stuttgart final as she got her hands on the coveted Porsche as a prize.

This time without the benefit of having had the extra matches in her legs, Konta can expect to be faced with an equally aggressive game coming back at her. Konta has the inner calm to perhaps rattle Siegemund who also knows a thing or two about mental fortitude in tough situations.

We ought to expect a bit of a battle though, and if Konta can edge this out in three sets, it will be a very good win for her indeed, but this is a brutal opener and the German might just lay siege to a strong run once more.

Prediction: Laura Siegemund in three sets
