Joe Salisbury wins doubles title in Illinois

  • Joe Salisbury & David O’Hare win Champaign doubles
  • Brydan Klein lost in second round in Yokohama
  • Kyle Edmund fell in round two in Uruguay

Champaign, IllinoisUSA  Joe Salisbury with David O’Hare collected the doubles trophy whilst in the singles Liam Broady fell in the first round and Dan Evans made it to round two. In Uruguay Kyle Edmund played his second clay event in a row, but went out in round two. In Yokohama Brydan Klein lost in the second round of the singles and doubles.

Salisbury & O’Hare progressed through the early rounds in straight sets, taking out the third seeds in round one and the second seeds in round two. The only set they dropped all tournament was against the second seeds when they lost the first set. The final saw them up against the top seeds, Salisbury & O’Hare took the final in straight sets for the loss of only five games. David Rice & Marcus Willis made the doubles draw as Lucky Losers and were handed a walkover in the first round, they ran into the second seeds in round two and were only able to win 4 games in that match. Joshua Milton & John-Patrick Smith fought hard to reach the semi finals. In their first two matches they needed match tiebreaks to decide the winners, and they ran into the top seeds in the semi final. Daniel Smethurst & Darren Walsh came through qualifying before running into the top seeds in the quarter finals.

In the singles and Evans faced the seventh seed in the first round, keeping up the form he has shown in other tournaments the Brit took out the seeded player in straight sets. The second round saw him face the eventual runner up and although the Brit took a set his run ended there. Broady faced the eighth seed in the first round, and suffered a straight sets defeated winning six games.

Moving to Montivedo Uruguay where Edmund was playing a second clay challenger in a row. Coming off the back of the title in Argentina the Brit was seeded fifth and had a qualifier in round one. Dropping the first set Edmund pulled the match round to take the win. The second round the Brit faced Christian Garin and Edmund lost to the Chilean in two very close sets with only one break per set. In the doubles Alexander Ward teamed up with Michael Linzer and they made it to the quarter final before going out in straight sets.

In Yokohama and Klein progressed to the second round before running into the third seed. Two tight sets involving one break of serve each set saw the Brit go out. In the doubles Klein teamed up with Matt Reid and they managed the quarter finals before falling to the third seeds.

Next week Brits will be in action in Adria, Toyota and Carlsbad.
