Brit of the Week

Outside of Wimbledon it wasn’t a particular good week for Brits on the Challenger & ITF tours. Isaac Stoute, Emily Arbuthnott, Eden Silva, Alicia Barnett & Jodie Burrage all made the second round of their respective events.

Starting with Stoute in Malaysia, in the first round the Brit was against Australian Thomas Hann. Stoute dominated the Australian during the match, with Hann not managing to get on the board in the first set. In the second set Hann claimed a couple of games, but overall Stoute was stronger and moved on 6-0, 6-2.

In the second round the Brit was drawn against the fourth seed Pruchya Isaro. The Thai player was much stronger in the first set, with Stoute struggling to get anything on the serve of Isaro. The seed seemed to be able to break at will and had soon dispatched the Brit 6-2, 6-3.

Over in Getxo Spain Arbuthnott first round opponent was Laura Pigossi. The Brazilian struggled against the Brit barely able to secure any games. Arbuthnott dominated in both sets to progress into the next round in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.

The second round saw the Brit against Spaniard Andrea Lazaro Garcia. Arbuthnott stayed close to the Spaniard in both sets, unfortunately Lazaro Garcia secured the break needed in each and ended the run of the Brit in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.

Eden Silva entered the ITF event in Setubal, Portugal. The first round saw the Brit was against Belarusian Yuliya Hatouka. The first set Silva managed to get the break of serve needed to take lead. Hatouka regrouped in the second set, fighting back to level the match. In the final set Silva once again found her game and secured the break to take the match and book a spot in the second round 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

In the second round Silva was drawn against Estelle Cascino. The Frenchwoman dominated the match with the Brit unable to get anything on the serve. Cascino was too strong and progressed through taking out Silva in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.

Alicia Barnett and Jodie Ann Burrage were just two of the Brits who entered the ITF event in Winnipeg. The first round saw Barnett against Alexandra Mikhailuk. The Canadian managed to stay with the Brit in each of the sets, however Barnett ultimately got the breaks and took the match in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.

The second round saw Barnett against seventh seed Victoria Rodríguez. The Mexican and Brit stayed toe to toe in the first set as neither was able to break the deadlock. The ensuing tiebreak was dominated by Rodriguez with Barnett struggling to get on the board. The second set was much more straightforward as the Mexican got the break and moved into the next round 7-6(2), 6-3.

The first round opponent of Burrage was Kelly Chen. The American fought hard to stay with the Brit in the first set, but Burrage secured the break required to take the lead. Burrage was dominant in the second set as Chen could do nothing on the serve. The Brit moved into the second round 6-4, 6-1.

In the second round Burrage was facing the eighth seed Astra Sharma. The Australian got off to a poor start as the Brit broke serve to take the lead. Sharma regrouped in the second set and got the break on the Burrage serve to level the match up. The final set saw the seed continue in the same vein and break the Brit serve once more to put an end to the run 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
