UK – Matchweek 14 saw some shock defeats for Chelsea and Liverpool, an impressive win for Spurs and Arsenal kept their place at the top.

Arsenal 5-0 Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest went into this fixture on a high after their surprise win over Liverpool last time out. However, the smiles were soon swept off their fans’ faces after a 5-0 drubbing at the hand of Arsenal.

Gabriel Martinelli gave the Gunners the lead in the fifth minute when he headed in Bukayo Saka‘s cross. Arsenal’s players in their celebrations paid tribute to Pablo Mari by holding up his shirt. Mari is on loan from the club to Monza and was stabbed during the Milan supermarket attack.

A worrying moment for Arsenal and England was seeing Saka limp off in the 27th minute. Reiss Nelson was his replacement who scored two goals in quick succession early in the second half.

Nelson then turned provider as he set up Thomas Partey he fired into the top corner from outside the box. The rout was then completed when Martin Odegaard smashed another one into the top corner.

The result meant Arsenal kept their place at the top of the league but they need to keep this form up if they are to stay there. Manchester City who beat Leicester City 1-0 thanks to a Kevin De Bruyne free-kick is snapping at their heels.

 

Brighton 4-1 Chelsea

Graham Potter‘s return to the Amex was not a pleasant one as his Chelsea side was heavily defeated and he was taunted by his former supporters with the chants, ‘You’re getting sacked in the morning!’ and ‘Potter! Potter! What’s the score?’ It was Potter’s first defeat as the Blues manager while it was new Brighton manager Robert De Zerbi‘s first win.

Leandro Trossard put Brighton ahead in just the fifth minute. Then own goals from Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Trevor Chalobah made it three for the home side before half-time.

Kai Havertz got one back for Chelsea early in the second half. However, his side could not get any more and Brighton’s victory was sealed in added time. Pascall Gross scored a tap-in to send Brighton’s fans into overdrive. Brighton is now eighth in the division and just three points behind Chelsea who are in sixth place.

 

Liverpool 1-2 Leeds

Jesse Marsch was under immense pressure at Leeds United after his side went into this game on the back of four straight defeats. Taking all three points at Anfield was the perfect response to those calling for the American to be sacked.

Rodrygogave the away side the lead in the fourth minute when he latched onto a mix-up between Joe Gomez and Alisson. But Mohamed Salah levelled the score just ten minutes later.

The winner did not come until the 89th minute, Crysencio Summerville turned and finished with the outside of his boot.

Leeds is now out of the bottom three as they climb up to 15th place. As for Jurgen Klopp‘s side, they have now suffered back-to-back defeats in the league which leaves them in ninth place.

 

Newcastle 4-0 Aston Villa

Newcastle who is in fourth place in the division beat Aston Villa heavily which meant that Eddie Howe‘s side is now unbeaten in their last eight matches.

Callum Wilson fired his penalty straight down the middle to give the Magpies the lead late on in the first half. Wilson got his second early in the second half when he headed in a cross from Kieran Trippier. 

Joelinton made it three with a tap-in. Then the in-form Miguel Almiron completed the rout with a curled shot into the top corner. from outside the box. The goal was Almiron’s seventh of the season.

Newcastle is in a good position to pursue a Champions League spot this season. Qualifying for this tournament would be massive for Howe’s side in terms of what players they can attract to the club with their financial backing.

 

Bournemouth 2-3 Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur came from behind to beat Bournemouth 3-2. The result saved more blushes for Antonio Conte‘s side after they lost their last two league matches to Manchester United and Newcastle.

Kieffer Moore scored twice to give the cherries a two-goal cushion by the 49th minute. The first was a nice sweeping finish before the 6 ft 5 striker executed a more trademark header.

However, Spurs got one back through Ryan Sessegnon‘s shot that went in off the post. Ben Davies equalised when he headed in from an Ivan Perisic corner.

The three points were snatched in the 92nd minute, Rodrigo Bentancur stabbed in from close range to complete the comeback and ensure Conte’s side remain third.

The Premier League returns this Saturday 5 November.
