UK – Last weekend saw Arsenal keep their place at the top of the league with a dramatic 3-2 win over Liverpool but can they maintain their impressive run of form?
Liverpool vs Manchester City, Sunday 16 October, kick-off 16:30
This match has usually gone down as a title decider in recent years but with Liverpool currently languishing in 10th place, it is a chance for them to show they can still compete with the best sides in the division.
Jurgen Klopp‘s side has not won in the league since their 2-1 victory over Newcastle at the end of August. There were positives in their performance against Arsenal such as Darwin Nunez netting his second league goal of the season. Although Nunez is a long way off Erling Haaland‘s tally of 15.
When the teams last met in the Community Shield at the start of the season, much of the buildup was on Haaland vs Nunez. That day it was Nunez who came out on top, scoring as Liverpool won 3-1. Haaland meanwhile had a frustrating game as he missed some guilt-edged chances. However, that was not a sign of things to come as Haaland has now proved in a remarkable style that he is the best forward in the league.
Haaland was also rested in midweek, as City drew 0-0 with Copenhagen in the Champions League so he will be raring to go come Sunday.
The Reds had a great result in the Champions League on Wednesday night as they swept aside Rangers 7-1. Mohammed Salah came off the bench to score a hat-trick in just six minutes at Ibrox.
City is still the only team yet to lose a league game this season. Last week’s expected 4-0 win over Southampton again showed the class of Pep Guardiola‘s side as they registered four different names on the scoresheet.
Score prediction: Liverpool 1-3 Manchester City
Leeds vs Arsenal, Sunday 16 October, kick-off 14:00
Arsenal remains the league leader after their victory over Liverpool at the Emirates last weekend. Bukayo Saka starred in that game scoring twice. His winner from the penalty spot showed immense bravery as England fans will remember his decisive miss in the penalty-shootout defeat to Italy in the Euro 2020 final.
Saka continued his goalscoring form by netting the winner against Boca/Glimt in the Europa League on Thursday night.
They come up against a Leeds side who have not won in the league since their 3-0 defeat of Chelsea on the 21 August. It is a game that Mikel Arteta‘s side should win if they are to really be title contenders.
The Brazilian pair of Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli has been key to Arsenal’s attack and between them have nine goals and five assists. If Jesse Marsch‘s side has any chance of getting a result at Elland Road on Sunday, then they will have to keep the two Gabriels quiet.
Score prediction: Leeds 0-3 Arsenal
Tottenham vs Everton, Saturday 15 October, kick-off 17:30
Spurs are currently in third place and they responded well to losing the North London derby as they defeated Brighton 1-0 at the Amex last weekend.
Harry Kane got the game’s only goal against the Seagulls, which was his eighth of the season. Everton lacks a goalscorer like Kane with their top goalscorer being 21-year-old Anthony Gordon who has two.
After back-to-back victories over West Ham and Southampton, Frank Lampard‘s side suffered a 2-1 defeat to Manchester United last time out. Alex Iwobi gave the Toffees the lead in that game which was his first goal of the season.
Tottenham also had an impressive result in the Champions League this week as they beat the Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt 3-2. Son Heung-min scored a brace whilst Kane got the other from the penalty spot. Antonio Conte‘s side is in good form in all competitions.
Score prediction: Tottenham 3-1 Everton
