UK – Last weekend saw lots of drama in the derbies with City smashing United 6-3 and Arsenal claiming a 3-1 win over Spurs. Hopefully, the excitement will continue as we head into Matchweek 10.
Arsenal vs Liverpool, Sunday 9 October, kick-off 16:30
Arsenal remains top of the league having only dropped points against Manchester United so far this season. They have won their last three games convincingly scoring three times in each game against Brentford, Tottenham and Bodø/Glimt.
Gabriel Jesus scored in their last two games which has taken his tally for the season up to five goals and three assists. Liverpool has a fellow Brazilian as their top goalscorer in Roberto Firmino who has the exact same amount of goals and assists as Jesus.
Jurgen Klopp‘s side has not had the best start to the season and they currently sit in 9th place. They have drawn their last two games since they beat Newcastle at the very last minute. Last weekend they were involved in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Brighton where the Reds would be disappointed to have conceded late on to Leandro Trossard who completed his hat-trick in the 83rd minute.
Trent Alexander-Arnold is a player with a point to prove as he has come under scrutiny recently and was left out of Gareth Southgate‘s last England squad. He has already played exceptionally during the week in the Champions League against Rangers where he scored a fantastic free kick. A top performance this weekend against the league leaders would go a long way towards forcing his way back into contention for the Three Lions ahead of the World Cup which is not far away now.
Score prediction: Arsenal 3-0 Liverpool
Manchester City vs Southampton, Saturday 8 October, kick-off 15:00
Manchester City is on serious form and has destroyed Wolves 3-0 and Manchester United 6-3 since their 1-1 draw with Aston Villa.
Erling Haaland cannot stop scoring and already has 14 goals so far. He has netted three times in his last three home matches which have made him the fastest player in Premier League history to score three hat-tricks. He also scored twice in the Champions League against Copenhagen during the week.
It is not just Haaland who opposition teams need to worry about Phil Foden also got a hat-trick against United which took his goals for the season up to five. Southampton visiting the Etihad this weekend will be quaking in their boots at the sight of Haaland and Foden. Especially as they are on the back of three successive defeats since they beat Chelsea.
Ralph Hasenhüttl‘s side is in 16th place in the division and needs to turn their bad run of form around or they will be in for a relegation battle. However, it is unlikely to come this weekend as they head to the home of the defending champions. Hasenhüttl needs at least an improved performance from his side as he is fighting to keep his job as the boss of the Saints.
Score prediction: Manchester City 4-0 Southampton
Everton vs Manchester United, Sunday 9 October, kick-off 19:00
Manchester United’s season so far has come with some highs and lows, they have beaten Arsenal but have suffered humiliating defeats against Brentford, Brighton and now Manchester City. Last weekend’s 6-3 defeat will go down as one of their worst performances in the Manchester derby since Sir Alex Ferguson’s side was defeated 6-1 at Old Trafford back in 2011.
Eric ten Hag‘s players did get a late consolation against City in Anthony Martial scoring twice late on to add to Antony‘s goal. They also beat Cypriot side Omonia 3-2 in the Europa League during the week where Marcus Rashford scored twice and Martial got the other.
Cristiano Ronaldo was left on the bench in the Manchester derby but he could score his 700th club goal if he plays this weekend. Frank Lampard‘s team have won their last two games which has moved them away from the drop zone and up to 11th place. They have Anthony Gordon, one of the most talented young players in the division. He has scored twice so far this season and has ambitions of going to the World Cup.
Score prediction: Everton 1-0 Manchester United
