UK – The title race is back on after Arsenal failed to beat Liverpool at Anfield which means that Manchester City is now just six points behind the Gunners.
Arsenal fail at Anfield again
With the form that both sides were on, this looked like the perfect opportunity for Arsenal to claim their first victory at Anfield since 2012. However, a late Roberto Firmino goal denied the Gunners all three points and puts the title race back in the mix.
Mikel Arteta‘s side was in cruise control after goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus. Although, nothing is ever straightforward in football. Mohamed Salah scored just before halftime and could have levelled the game soon after the break but he dragged his penalty wide.
The Home side was not done and Trent Alexander-Arnold whipped in a cross which Firmino scored from in the 87th minute. The drama was not done then as Aaron Ramsdale was forced into making miraculous saves from Darwin Nunez, Salah and Ibrahima Konate to make sure Arsenal at least got a point.
After surrendering a two-goal lead, Arteta’s side will feel that this is two points dropped. Manchester City who beat Southampton 4-1 this weekend is now just six points behind Arenal. Pep Guardiola‘s side also has a game in hand and faces the Gunners on April 26.
Lampard’s losing start
Frank Lampard‘s return to the Chelsea dugout is a great story. However, the club legend’s first game back was a disaster, as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers. The caretaker manager got a great reception from the travelling supporters at Molineux but his side could not repay the faith.
The Blues’ poor form continued as they have now failed to score in three consecutive games. Wolves put on a great show and Matheus Nunes‘ wonder strike was enough to seal the three points for the home side.
Lampard’s side remains 11th in the Premier League but faces Real Madrid in a massive game in the Champions League on Wednesday. European football is what matters for the Blues now that they have nothing to play for domestically.
As for Wolves, they are now 13th in the league with Julen Lopetegui‘s side earning some much-needed breathing space. They have a favourable final eight games of the season, so if they can pick up a few more points then they should be safe.
Bournemouth claim vital win
Bournemouth moved out of the relegation zone with a crucial 1-0 victory over Leicester City. Philip Billing took advantage of a James Maddison mistake before slotting what turned out to be the winning goal in the first half.
The Foxes still do not have a manager following the sacking of Brendan Rodgers, Adam Sadler took charge but there was no improvement to be seen. Talks were ongoing with former Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch but the American decided to walk away from the job.
Leicester who remains in the bottom three does have a daunting fixture against Manchester City coming up. They will need to have a new manager in place for that fixture next weekend.
The Cherries who are now 15th are up against Tottenham Hotspur in their next game. Gary O’Neil‘s side has had a mixed form of late but the three points against a relegation rival in Leicester could be crucial in deciding who stays up and goes down.
