Wolverhampton Wanderers 0 Liverpool 1
Liverpool ended a run of three games without a win as a 13th minute goal from Harvey Elliott saw them beat Wolves at Molineux in their FA Cup third-round replay.
There had been controversy in the first tie at Anfield, with Wolves having a potential late winner ruled out for offside. The decision could not be checked by VAR because of a missing camera angle and this encounter also began in strange circumstances.
Adama Traore was about to send a cross into the box when the lights went out. And once the match resumed it did not take long for Liverpool to put down a marker. Elliott took a pass from Thiago Alcantara, advanced unchallenged into the Wolves half and unleashed a raking 30-yard effort which sailed over the dive of the backtracking Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa and into the net.
Liverpool played with greater fluency in the first half and came close to a second only for the flag to go up after Fabio Carvalho put the ball in the net. Wolves pushed hard in the second half but could not find an equaliser. Raul Jimenez had a close-range header deflected over late on, but Liverpool saw the game out.
Jurgen Klopp’s side will now face Brighton, who beat them in the Premier League on Saturday, in the next round.
Leeds United 5 Cardiff City 2
Wilfried Gnonto struck twice as Leeds hammered Cardiff in a replay to reach the fourth round.
The Italian international opened the scoring with a stunning volley in off the crossbar from Rodrigo’s measured chip. The 19-year-old also bagged the home side’s third, slotting in low to put the game beyond Cardiff shortly after Rodrigo had made it 2-0.
Cardiff thought they had reduced the deficit but Curtis Nelson’s header from a corner was ruled out for offside via VAR.
Jesse Marsch’s side added two more in the second half through Patrick Bamford. The striker made it three goals in two substitute appearances since he returned from injury.
Callum Robinson scored two late consolations for Cardiff.
Leeds will travel to fifth tier Boreham Wood or League One Accrington Stanley in round four. Those two sides were due to meet in a third-round replay on Tuesday, but this was postponed because of a frozen pitch. The rescheduled game will now take place on Tuesday January 24.
Birmingham come from behind to go through
Championship side Birmingham City were given a scare in their FA Cup third-round tie as they needed two second-half goals to come from behind and to beat League One strugglers Forest Green Rovers. The tie had been scheduled to take place on January 7 but was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
Bristol City, Luton Town and West Bromwich Albion all came through replays to progress to the fourth round.
The FA cup fourth round will take place between Friday January 27th and Monday January 30th. Boreham Wood and Accrington Stanley will play their third round replay on Tuesday 24th January.
