League Two Grimsby Town reached the FA Cup fifth round for the first time since 1996, with a sensational victory over Championship promotion chasers Luton Town. 60 league places separate the two sides. However, Grimsby, who had already disposed of League One teams during their cup run, once again proved that the FA Cup can be a great leveler.

Harry Clifton, who’s goal at Kenilworth road earned the replay, opened the scoring on nine minutes with a powerful left-foot shot. A half-volley from Danilo Orsi doubled the Mariners’ advantage on 28 minutes. And in stoppage time at the end of the first half Danny Amos’ free-kick gave the home side a 3-0 lead at the break.

Luton rallied in the second period, however, Grimsby held out with goalkeeper Max Crocombe making some fine saves.

Grimsby are currently 16th in League Two, nine points above the relegation zone, and nine points below the play-off places. Their reward for their victory is an away tie at Southampton on March 1.They go into the last 16 as the lowest-ranked team left in the competition.

Sheffield United denied Wrexham an FA Cup clash with Tottenham as they won their fourth-round replay at Bramall Lane.

However, the National League cup fighters, owned by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, pushed the Blades all the way. It took two goals deep into stoppage time to secure the Championship promotion chasers a passage into the fifth round.

For large parts of the night that looked like the Welsh side could spring another shock. Paul Mullin, who has been outstanding for the Dragons over the last two seasons, converted a controversial penalty after Anel Ahmedhodzic had given United the lead.

However, the tide turned soon after when Mullin missed a second penalty. And then injury time goals for Billy Sharp and Sander Berge send the Yorkshire side through to meet Spurs on March 1.

Fulham, Burnley and Fleetwood go through, Premier League drama at Old Trafford

Fulham came through a potentially tricky replay at the Stadium of Light to beat Sunderland 3 – 1. Championship leaders Burnley overcame League One Ipswich, while Fleetwood Town knocked out Sheffield Wednesday.

In the Premier League, a pulsating Roses derby at Old Trafford saw managerless Leeds United go 2-0 up against Manchester United. However, the Red Devils fought back to rescue a point.

The FA Cup fifth round ties are scheduled to take place on Tuesday February 28 and Wednesday March 1. The Premier League returns at the weekend.
