Fleming/Hutchins & Inglot make a good start, Murray and Marray’s turn

By Phil James

Jamie Murray and Jonathan Marray are both in Australian Open action tonight in as the Brits look to continue a good start to the men’s doubles draw.

A disastrous day one at Melbourne Park saw Heather Watson and Laura Robson both eliminated from the women’s singles first round.

But Andy Murray brought a smile back to the faces of British tennis fans as he continued his comeback from injury on Tuesday with a straight-sets win over Go Soeda.

And that smile widened when Ross Hutchins, making his own comeback after a year off battling cancer, and Colin Fleming reached round two of the men’s doubles.

The pair were playing together on the tour for only the second time since Hutchins’ was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in December 2012.

The Brits dropped the first set but recovered to beat Australian Marinko Matosevic and Poland’s Michal Przysieszny 4-6 6-4 6-0 on Wednesday.

Londoner Dominic Inglot and Filipino partner, Treat Huey, also had to come from a set down; the 12th seeds beat the Colmbian pairing of Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Looking to join them in round two are Marray and Jamie Murray.

Jamie settled into a fruitful partnership last year with Australian John Peers, resulting in three ATP titles together and being seeded 15th in Melbourne.

The pair face Peers’ compatriots Matt Reid and Luke Saville with the winners facing Eric Butorac and Raven Klaasen.

Marray also enjoyed a successful 2013 partnering Fleming in Hutchins’s absence and is now hoping to forge a relationship with Australian veteran Paul Hanley.

The pair lost their first match of the year, a tough first-rounder against Butorac and Klaasen at the Heineken Open.

The Melbourne draw was not any kinder to them, pitching them against the top seeds and world number ones, Bob and Mike Bryan.
