Brit of the Week
Emily Appleton was the fifth seed on the clay in Greece, the Brit faced Josephine Boualem in the first round. The Frenchwoman kept toe to toe with Appleton during the first set, but it was the seed who secured the break of serve to lead. Despite the best efforts of Boualem the Brit took the win in straight sets after breaking again in the second 7-5, 6-4.
The second round saw the Brit against a home favourite Vasiliki Karvouni. The Greek struggled in the first set as Appleton broke once to seal the first set. In the second set Karvouni mounted a great fight back and limited the seed to only one game in the entire set to level up. Appleton, however, re-grouped and just like in the first set secured the break early in the set to take the win 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.
In the quarter-final the Brit was against the second seed Laura Schaeder. The German found herself dominated by Appleton in the first set, and could only win one game, however in the second set Schaeder turned the tables on the fifth seed. The German totally dominated the set with Appleton not able to win any game at all. The final set saw the Brit back on course, as the fifth seed broke the German twice to book a place in the semi-final 6-1, 0-6, 6-3.
The semi-final saw Appleton take on Anastasia Detiuc the fourth seed. The Czech was the higher ranked and the first set proved this would be a difficult match. The Brit managed to stay with Detiuc until right towards the end of the set when the fourth seed took the break. Appleton then found herself down a break early in the second set and was unable to recover this time and fell 7-5, 6-3 but a good week in Greece for the Brit.
