- Jamie Murray & Katarina Srebotnik lose in straight sets
- Played against men’s doubles partner Bruno Soares and Elena Vesnina
Melbourne, Australia- Jamie Murray & Katarina Srebotnik are out of the Australian Open mixed doubles tournament after a straight sets loss to men’s partner Bruno Soares & Elena Vesnina.
Fourth seeds, Murray & Srebotnik, had made the quarter finals of the mixed doubles and faced fifth seeds Soares & Vesnina . Murray & Soares know each others games as they are partners on the doubles tour, and have made the men’s doubles semi final together.
The first set saw Soares & Vesnina playing the better tennis as they created three break points and took two of them to lead in the set. Murray & Srebotnik were unable to get a look in on the fifth seeds service games and in under half an hour the first set had gone the way of Soares & Vesnina 6-2.
In the second set the fourth seeds were serving better, making it harder for their opponents. However, Soares & Vesnina managed to claim the one vital break of serve from the four chances they created. This led to Murray & Srebotnik again finding themselves behind in the set. The Brit/Slovenian were still struggling to create any break points on the serve of Soares & Vesnina, and it was the fifth seeds that took the match as the second set was secured at 6-3.
The Brazilian/Russian pairing will face the winner of the Sania Mirza/Ivan Dodig vs Martina Hingis/Leander Paes quarter final in another match that will pit team mate vs team mate with the world number one women’s team facing each other.
Murray & Soares are back on court Thursday this time together as they play their men’s doubles semi final against French pairing Lucas Pouille & Adrian Mannarino.
Play continues midnight GMT 28th January
