Australian Open Day Five Results & Quick Hits

  • British hopes continued to ride high as both Andy Murray and Dan Evans sailed into the fourth round. Thankfully Murray’s awkward tumble in his previous match seemed to have no ill-effects on his ankle as he handed the big serving Sam Querrey with ease. Evans turned up his level a notch to dispatch Bernard Tomic.
  • Roger Federer was imperious against Tomas Berdych, while compatriot Stan Wawrinka had to come from a set down against Viktor Troicki to book his place in the R16
  • On the women’s side, many people’s pick for a dark horse gallop, Elina Svitolina fell by the way-side and we were treated to an epic from two veterans and the most enduring characters on the tour Svetlana Kuznetsova and Jelena Jankovic with the Russian prevailing in a third set battle.
  • Angelique Kerber looked like a defending champion for the first time, steaming past the Kristyna Pliskova. Also in imperious form was Venus Williams who lost just one game on her way to the fourth round.
  • Aussie sweetheart Ashleigh Barty bowed out though to a more dominant Garbiñe Muguruza.

Day Six Highlights & Schedule

  • With the shock exit of Novak Djokovic on Friday the draw opens up with the focus on who will benefit the most.
  • Our pick of the ATP matches to watch will be Rafael Nadal v Alexander Zverev – the German has had to fight a little to get this far, and he knows he has what it takes to have Nadal on the ropes but can he come good on that promise and halt Nadal’s come-back?
  • On the women’s side British hopes ride once more with Johanna Konta who has a tricky third round match-up against Caroline Wozniacki
