SHENZHEN, CHINA – Andy Murray takes on home favourite Zhang Zhizhen in a battle of the wildcards, ahead of closing down his season early.

Ahead of the tournament, and probably not coming as a surprise to many, Andy Murray announced that after Shenzhen and Beijing, he would shut his season down early to concentrate on ‘reconditioning and training’ to be ready in time for the new season.

The tone of the message was positive, and it is noticeable that he is now talking about training and reconditioning, as opposed to the focus on rehabilitation.

However, there is the small matter of this tournament, and he faces a Zhang Zhizhen. Shenzhen has some significance for Zhang – he won his ATP World Tour debut as a qualifier in 2015, and he has been mainly playing the Challenger circuit this year, with a smattering of Futures events.

Zhang has the advantage of plenty of match time though – something that Murray has not had since bowing out of the US Open in the second round. It might be worth noting that last year, Zhang came through qualifying to make the quarter-final in Shenzhen.

He has been playing consistently though throughout the year, while Murray’s comeback to the tour was delayed, and has been a little stop start. However, the Brit’s experience really ought to carry him through at least to the second round.

Murray & Zhang are scheduled on Centre Court, not before 6:30PM (11:30am BST).
