Cameron Norrie v Wu Di [WC] | First Meeting

It was a turbulent weekend in Glasgow for the current British No. 2, Cameron Norrie was at least able to put behind him a first home loss having had match points to put GB in a commanding position.

With Denis Istomin pulling out, his route to British glory was made a lot easier, and he took command of the situation. That confidence boost will be key for him to get a good start against a home-crowed favourite and wild card in Wu Di.

Back in 2013, he had the accolade of being the first Chinese man to play singles at the Australian Open, and credited his success to another star at the time, Li Na. However, he had none of the resources that were available to Li, and for spells of time struggled along without a coach.

It is a long way from the heady days of joining Li in the Hopman Cup in 2012, and after the agony of failing to convert a match-point against Marin Cilic in the first round of the Shanghai Masters in 2015, he had to wait a year to record his first ATP World Tour win in Shenzhen in 2016 and actually beat Kyle Edmund in the ATP Challenger Tour in Maui to become the first Chinese player to win a title on that tour.

Wu plies his trade mainly on the Challenger Tour, and has even been in some Futures events, so with Norrie’s break-through year which has seen him reach three ATP World Tour semi-finals, it is more likely that the steady game of Norrie will be far too much for Wu.

Prediction: Norrie in straight sets

Norrie and Wu are scheduled on Centre Court, not before 4:30pm (9:30am BST).
