Evans lost to the opening set to his Lithuanian opponent 6-2 but came back to win in three sets 2-6, 7-6(3), 6-2 in just over two hours.

The opening set was firmly in Berankis’ control. Evans did not earn a single break point and in turn dropped serve twice. However in the second set the Brit raised his level and earned set points at 6-5 which were all saved. Evans went on to take the tiebreaker 7-3 to take us to a final set.

With momentum firmly behind him, Evans opened the decider with a break to love and never looked back. A second break of serve made it 5-2 before the win was secured.

Second seed Pablo Cuevas or Stephane Robert will be Evans’ third round opponent on Wednesday.

Edmund on the other hand lost a tight encounter to Dolgopolov earlier in the day. There was only one break of serve during the whole match, but Ukrainian edged the Brit 6-4, 7-6(5).

The crucial break came midway through the opening set with Dolgopolov finding enough on the return to take his chance. The second saw no break point opportunities at all which led to a tiebreaker. Edmund was able to save one match point, but on the second attempt the Ukrainian sealed his place in the third round.

Dolgopolov will face Canadian qualifier Frank Dancevic in the third round after the world number 292 upset Mikhail Kukushkin 6-4, 6(4)-7, 7-6(2). There were also victories for Gilles Muller, Fernando Verdasco, and Marcos Baghdatis.

The Nottingham Open continues on Wednesday.
