Brit of the Week

Jan Choinski entered the ATP Challenger event and was unseeded. The Brit drew the second seed Yannick Hanfmann in the first round. The German had been given a wildcard to the event. The Brit and German stayed close in the first set, before Choinski eventually managed to break serve. The second set was dominated by the Brit who broke quickly and Hanfmann could not get back into the match. Choinski took the match 6-4, 6-2.

The second round saw the Brit against qualifier Peter Heller. The German found Choinski too good in the first set, as the Brit broke early and held on to take the set. The second set was more of the same, as Choinski broke again to move through in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.

In the quarter-final Choinski was against Alejandro Moro Canas. The Spaniard had defeated the eighth seed in the previous round but proved no trouble for the Brit. Choinski broke early in the first set and went on to hold the lead. The second set was more of the same, with Choinksi once again breaking Moro Canas to move into the next round 6-3, 6-3.

The semi-final pitched the Brit against Alexander Ritschard. The Swiss broke early in the first set and took the lead. The second set however, was much closer. Choinski went toe-to-toe with the Swiss and forced a tiebreak. In the breaker the Brit edged through and levelled up the match. The final set set was close as Choinski and Ritschard fought for the win. Eventually, Ritschard broke serve and moved into the final 6-3, 6-7(7), 6-4.

Honourable Mention

Jay Clarke was the second seed in Sarajevo, Bosnia. The Brit drew Drazen Petrovic in the first round. Clarke dominated the Bosnian from the outset and barely put a foot wrong  and soon had the match in the bag. The seed eased through 6-0, 6-2.

The second round saw Clarke against Japanese player Koki Matsuda. Clarke dominated again from the outset and soon had the match under control. No matter what Matsuda tried, the Japanese could not get back into the match. The Brit eased through into the next round 6-2, 6-2.

In the quarter-final Clarke was against German Adrian Oetzbach. The Brit dominated the first set, losing only one game to ease through. The second set was much closer. Clarke and Oetzbach stayed close before the Brit finally secured the break needed and moved into the next round 6-1, 6-4.

The semi-final saw the Brit against Mirza Basic. The Bosnian and Clarke went toe-to-toe in the first set, with Basic eventually breaking serve to take the lead. Clarke re-grouped in the second set and dominated the Bosnian to level up the match. In the final set, neither player gave an inch. Eventually, a tiebreak ensued. In the breaker it was the Bosnian who dominated and sealed the match 7-5, 2-6, 7-6(1).
